"Literacy is for everyone, for every purpose, now..."

What We Do

The Powell River Literacy Council promotes awareness of the importance of literacy for all citizens, regardless of age. We do this through a variety of campaigns - like Heroes Read, BookCrossing and the Read Program, as well as by promoting the services, programs and events that are available in this region. We celebrate Family Literacy Day, International Literacy Day and other special days that bring focus to literacy.

One of the ways we get information out to the community is through our Facebook page - search for Powell River LOC and 'friend' us to get updates!

Background

The Powell River Literacy Council was formed in 2004. The Council applied for Literacy Now funding to develop a Community Literacy Plan and agreed to act as the Literacy Now Task Group. Powell River Employment Program (PREP) Society was appointed as the steward for the Literacy Now funding, and they continue to play that role today.

The Literacy Council/Task Group membership includes broad representation from the School District, the School Board, Community Health, literacy service providers (e.g., Malaspina UniversityCollege and Family Place), Success By Six, the Powell River Public Library, Sliammon, the local business community, parents and community members.

Because literacy affects every part of our community, and every one of us, we encourage participation from anyone and everyone who is interested in literacy. If you are interested in getting involved, please email Literacy Outreach Coordinator Emma Levez Larocque at emma@powellriverliteracy.com, or call her at 604-485-2004.

The values that have been identified as important in the Powell River Community Literacy Plan are as follows:

  • Access: Minimal barriers between those in need and the services which can help them
  • Community Commitment/Leadership: Political and business leaders are working alongside the providers of literacy services to realize a common vision
  • Cooperation/Coordination: Stronger relationships between services and providers
  • Diversity: Literacy services of all types for all ages
  • Integration: Literacy services are embedded in all types of activities
  • Motivation/Incentive: People needing literacy services understand the benefits
  • Sustainability: Services will continue to be offered
